Well, after being publicly chastised I decided it’s probably time for another update to our endlessly exciting saga.
Things were well in the Sorensen household. Order had slowly been restored after the onslaught of boxes and ‘stuff’ that threatened the comfort of our domain, thanks to our brave hero, lady Shona, who attacked the mass of stored goods and furniture head-on, leaving helpless stacks of folded cardboard in her wake. Not even dust escaped her wrath, and finally our abode was fit to host guests from a distant land, guests who were not unexpected.
My mother, sister, and her family arrived mid-afternoon on Friday, while the sun was still high and readily blistering the very air we breathed. We met at a local steakhouse, dined on the various proteins and vegetation offered up by the establishment, and planned for the event that would be held the following day. A small gathering was to take place in our honor for those who were unable to grace us with their presence on our most glorious wedding day. We organized the tasks and split up into two teams, one was assigned to shop for all of the goods necessary for the event, the other tasked with the chore of an afternoon snooze. Each team completed their duty successfully and the remainder of the day passed quickly and uneventfully while children played games and the rest of us turned our attention to the evening Olympics.
Though morning came early in the Sorensen household it fled just as quickly, and soon everyone was busy preparing for the event. Food was cooked, plates were garnished, and tableware was organized while I labored vigorously in the yard, the sun glinting off of my sweaty, muscled, pale physique. Soon the preparations were complete and guests slowly began to arrive. First family, then coworkers, then old friends all came and gathered to meet the new couple, partake of a finger food feast, and tour the new, nearly finished basement. Introductions were made, gifts were given, and joyous chatter echoed throughout the bare halls of our home. Time passed with the calmness of an ocean breeze, and the guests slowly began making their exits with exchanged expressions of congratulations and gratitude as the event slowly meandered to a close.
I went to check on the children, who had been playing games in the theater all the while, and when I returned from the dark recesses of the basement the leftovers and refuse from the event had mysteriously cleaned themselves up. We rested a bit from the events of the day, then we all went out for some evening entertainment consisting of a film that told a story of dark caves, ancient dinosaurs, and a lost land deep within the earth itself. The film ran late into the evening, and when it was complete we retreated back home and prepared for sleep, our eyes heavy and minds at peace.
I awoke relatively late on Sunday morning to muffled voices originating from the kitchen. My mother, sister, and her family were preparing for their trek back to the distant land from whence they came. I sauntered out to the kitchen, where we exchanged hugs and kind words, and then they departed on their journey. Again the house was silent, but already I could hear the happy memories begin to whisper forth from the walls of our home, and in the silence, I began to ponder what new adventures may await us, what other visitors may someday take refuge in our abode, and whether we will be winning the eternal battle against dirt and clutter when that day comes.
