Rest and Relaxation

Thursday was the first day where we had nothing planned, and the first day that we slept in! We stayed in bed all morning, then got up, got ready, and went down to the pool for a few hours! As you can see, I need to work on my tan! We then cleaned up and relaxed a bit, then had dinner at a place featured on “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” called Four Kegs, famous for its stromboli. It was good enough, but both of us agreed that it wasn’t anything we’d crave later or think about the next time we visit Vegas.

Onward To Vegas

Wednesday was our longest drive on the trip. We went from San Simeon to Barstow, then up I-15 to Vegas.  We left at 10:30 AM or so and got to the hotel around 7:30 PM.  On our way out of town we stopped once more at the Pacific Ocean to take some photos, and then headed off on the long twisty highways to Barstow.  We stopped for lunch and gas in Tehachapi and later took a short rest stop in Baker, where they have the world’s tallest thermometer, which read 109 degrees at the time. Once we got to Vegas we immediately checked in at The Venetian, grabbed a quick sandwich, and relaxed the rest of the evening.

The Tour

Well, we got back from the Hearst Castle tour at about 4:00 PM.  It was just up the road, and we went to the 10:00 Tour #1, had lunch, then went to the 2:00 Tour #2. It’s a castle made mostly of reinforced concrete dressed up with stone and imported works in a Spanish/Mediterranean style. The scale of the facility is of course large, but the really impressive thing about the place is the collection of the valuable antiquities that have been collected and displayed. 5000 year old egyptian statues, Greek marble statues, Roman tile mosaics, old ceilings and woodwork from Spain, it’s all pretty amazing.  Here’s a small sampling of all of the photos we took, along with a video at the indoor pool.

On The Road

Well, we’re finally on the road, both literally and figuratively. The wedding was amazing!! Thanks again to everyone for their support, efforts, and thoughts.  We’ll get some photos up once we have enough collected to provide the full experience 😉 . Maybe after the professional ones come.

We stayed in Orange on Sunday and took care of a few things like taking back the tuxes, etc.  Then yesterday we met Shona’s parents for lunch, said goodbye, and hit the road to San Simeon, up Highway 1 and through some wine country in Santa Maria. We got here just as the sun was setting, and didn’t quite get a chance to make it to the beach or take photos, but I did manage to snap a few from the car. We unloaded at the hotel and then went back to a small local town called Cambria, where we ate at Main Street Grill. Man, it’s cold here! 58 degrees last night and this morning, and they’re forecasting mid 60’s as the high all week!

We’ll be off to see the Hearst Castle here in a bit. We have two tours scheduled, with a lunch in between. After that we might go back and look around in Cambria, there are some tourist shops and things there.

Rehearsal BBQ

Well, last night was the wedding rehearsal, after a long day of travel with the family.  We met at the church at 6:00 PM.   Our families and friends barely had time to get acquainted and then suddenly we were going over everything that was happening at the wedding.  Going through the motions like that made it feel real!  It didn’t last very long and then we went back to Shona’s parents’ house and had some BBQ we’d picked up earlier.  There was foot, baggo, irish singing, and good time was had by all. My mother furnished the photos.

Welcome, Internet Travelers!

Our new site is up and running, but just barely! The framework has just been installed so there will likely be layout changes as time goes on. Bear with us!  Not sure how long it will take since the wedding is coming up shortly (Aug 2nd, yeah!).  We’re hoping that the site can be used to share various things that are going on with us, to keep friends and family up to date. The temporary tag line for the site is “Not the most boring family blog around”, which is really more of an aspiration than a statement of fact 😉

Here’s a sample of our invitations!
