I PROMISE These Pictures Were NOT staged!

This is what happens when Mommy and Emrick fight for control of an oatmeal-loaded spoon.

It was after I wiped down his shirt and high chair that I noticed this meteor-sized glob on his forehead. I think he stuck it there on purpose to make me laugh… ’cause I certainly was not amused by his shenanigans before then!

Previously Unposted Pics: Handsome Devil Edition

These pics were taken in April, and somehow they were never posted, maybe because Emrick looks so dreary-eyed in most of them.

IN OTHER NEWS, Emrick is one step closer to walking independently (and well). Yesterday, he took his first real hands-free steps, unprompted  by me or Marcus.

For quite a while now, Marcus and I have “practiced” with Emrick, by having him walk back and forth between us (remember that video?). But Emrick has otherwise done all of his walking while holding on to walls and furniture. That has all changed now! Yesterday I was with him in the play room and he was holding on to a little chair we have in there. All of a sudden he let go of the chair and walked to the middle of the room, 7 or 8 steps, and then dropped to his knees. I couldn’t believe it. Then, in the evening when Marcus was home, he did it several more times.

Anyway, it’s amazing, but scary, too. His balance is still very imperfect, and so when he gets close to his destination he gets excited to “land” there, and he sort of lets himself fall forward, knowing that he will be caught by the object in front of him. Now, that’s just fine when the object in front of him is the soft couch. But as of last night, he now also lands/falls toward walls, shelves, glass doors, and other hard surfaces! Its is going to require constant vigilance!  The playroom had become the one room where I could sit down in there with him, but not necessarily look at him every second because there wasn’t any way he could really hurt himself, and he was allowed to touch and trash everything in there. No hard tile, no sharp objects. But now! Now he stops his walking momentum by landing forehead first on the built-in shelves. And the thing is, he starts moving so fast. One second he’s holding on to the outside wall of the play pen, I turn my head to cough, and when I turn it back, he is halfway to the door, on his feet. And I need to be there to catch him!

Ah, well. Hopefully this phase  won’t last more than a couple of weeks, and he will walk totally independently, and safely, without relying on walls for brakes. That’s how it was with the cruising. His cruising was clumsy, and I was always following him around while he did it because he hit his head so easily. Then he cruised like a pro, and learned to fall on his butt instead of his head. So as long as we were in the playroom, I let him cruise across the room from me. So, I guess the same progression will happen with the hands-free walking. Sooner rather than later, I hope!

Emrick’s Third Haircut, Part 2

After Emrick’s haircut, we gave him a bath. Here he is, all washed and jammied up!

So intense!

Next, we headed to the playroom for walking practice and play time!

~muah!~ I love you, orangespikeyball!

Next, Marcus walked Emrick down the hall, toward the home office.

Emrick still does most of his walking holding on to walls and furniture.

Look how shiny and light his hair looks now.

Cutie.

omg. Cheeks!

Next, you will see that Marcus is holding two door stops in his hands. We took them off the baseboards in the playroom because Emrick plays with them and then pulls them off, and we don’t want him sticking one down his throat when we aren’t looking!

It's a unique baby that can be lured with doorstops 😉

GIMME!!

Oh yeeeeah!

Show me what to do with my doorstop, Daddy!

Never mind, I'll just put it in my mouth...

Hey. You took back my doorstop 🙁

I'll take that back now, please!

After this we put the doorstops back on and decided to just watch him carefully if he crawls over to one of the stops to play with it. We would have left the stops off, but the door handle on the playroom door has made a small dent in the wall (Emrick likes to play with open doors as well!) so we need those stops! Yesterday I watched as he repeatedly grabbed/struck the coiled doorstop to watch and hear it vibrate, and somehow, it did not come off of the baseboard. So hopefully we can leave them on for now, and Emrick can continue to enjoy their sweet, sweet music 🙂

Emrick’s Third Haircut, Part 1

About a month and a half ago, we gave Emrick his second haircut. We didn’t take as much time with it as we had with the first one. In fact, all we did was trim the edges, just to get the hair out of his eyes and off of his ears. But we knew he’d be due for something more thorough before too much longer. So last night we put him in the high chair, and Marcus took his clippers to Emrick’s head. As you can see from the look on Emrick’s face — which remained virtually unchanged — he did NOT enjoy the experience. In fact, I had to hold his arms down because he kept trying to fight off his clipper-wielding father. Once his arms were down, he settled into resentful, but peaceful, submission.

Get that buzzing piece of machinery away from my head!

I'm going to get you back for this, Mom. Mark my words!

When it was all over, we made it up to him by letting him play with my comb...

...and gnaw on it, too.

There's our smilin' baby!

Tune in tomorrow to find out what happened after the haircut!

(It’s not exciting!)

(But Emrick looks darling in the pics, so tune in for that!!!!)

Emrick v. Watermelon

After enjoying a refreshing wedge of watermelon on the Fourth of July, I handed the rind to Pookie and let him gnaw away. Marcus took some pics with his phone. It’s hard to tell if Emrick is actually enjoying the melon, but he was certainly interested in getting acquainted with it.

Sorry there’s no “story” here. Feel free to write your own captions!

Emrick’s Weekend Antics, So Far

'Cause nothing says Fourth of July like roses and watermelon.

I spy a baby. Can you?

I think I love this picture.

And this one, too.

Again.

Oh, Emrick. So perfect.
