Three Rows of Abacus

It’s been awhile since we did a post, so I thought I’d just drop some recent videos here for you. Not only is Emrick getting pretty good at math, but he is a bit of a comedian as well — at least Holly seems to think so. The first video is mostly Emrick, but keep your eye out for a Holly cameo. She looks so independent! You’ll also notice that Emrick got a haircut between the first and second videos.

Easter Was Days Ago!

I hope everyone found lots of eggs on Easter and that each one contained a small Reese’s peanut butter cup inside of it, and that you didn’t dump a whole bunch of those peanut butter cups inside the cab of one of your toy trucks, and that when you shook the truck to get them out that you didn’t find that two of them were stuck in an awkward spot and that you didn’t cry to your mom to get them out and that you didn’t discover that your mom was unable to wedge them out even though she could touch them, and that your mom didn’t promise that Daddy would get them out and that your mom didn’t forget to have Daddy get them out and that you yourself didn’t forget all about the peanut butter cups until the next morning when you came downstairs and saw the truck and immediately remembered that there were two peanut butter cups stuck inside and so started your day with tears, and that it’s not currently almost four days later and those peanut butter cups are still stuck inside the toy truck. I really hope that didn’t happen to any of y’all.

Happy Easter!

Holly is Seven Months Old Today!

And she’s my darling girl, even though she is not sleeping through the night!

I realized the other day that while Holly’s newborn days were much easier than Emrick’s (much, much, much easier) that at this point — at seven months — Emrick was the easier baby. I know comparing them is useless, but it’s just where my brain naturally goes. She has almost always woken up at least twice a night to feed, but a few weeks ago she started waking up a lot more often than that. Her weight is fine, so I know that some of those feedings are just “comfort nursing,” as they call it. In other words, she’s not hungry, but when her body naturally wakes she wants Mama to nurse her back to sleep rather than getting back to sleep on her own. Emrick took milk (and later, formula) from a bottle, and so never became accustomed to falling asleep across a soft pillow on my lap. Holly, on the other hand, depends on it. That situation used to be fine by me, but lately she wakes up not even to be fed, but just to be rocked back to sleep on that pillow. And hey, even THAT would be fine with me, if it bought five or so hours of sleep at a time. But lately? It buys 45 minutes. So something has to change, and that’s what I’m working on this week.

Otherwise, though, Holly is doing great! She’s starting to make consonant-vowel combinations, and as I said in the last post, she can pull herself to standing now. Marcus lowered her crib mattress the other night to allow for this new development, which is a good thing, since it took her only about 24 hours to apply her new standing skills to the crib. I have little doubt at this point that she will be an early walker.

A co-worker of Marcus’s recently gave us a bin full of clothes that his two little girls had outgrown, and that tutu-reminiscent skirt was in the mix. I didn’t necessarily have feelings one way or the other on whether or not I was the type of mom who enjoys dressing her baby girl in a frilly skirt, but as it turns out, I am TOTALLY the type of mom who enjoys dressing her baby girl in a frilly skirt. I mean, look at that picture. How could I NOT be?

Holly weighs 16 pounds, and measures about 26 inches. She’s a mover, a stander, and my sweet, sweet little cupcake <3<3

We love you, Holly Darling! ~muah!~

Sick as a Pookie

What do you spy in the background of this photo?

Why, yes! That’s Emrick, lying half naked across a pillow. Let’s have a closer look.

Poor Emrick was sick and miserable yesterday. He was on a vomiting rampage. I went into his room yesterday morning to find that he’d thrown up on his sheet. When I got him up, I asked him if he wanted to stay in his jammies for the day, but he shook his head. “Do you want to get dressed then?” He nodded. So I put clothes on him, and we were downstairs less than ten minutes before those clothes got puked on. Poor kid.

Holly, on the other hand, was feeling great. So while Emrick’s day looked like this:

Holly’s day looked like this:

Actually, Holly’s day was even more exciting than a box full of toys. For the first time, she pulled herself into an entirely upright  standing position all on her own! For perspective, Emrick was about a month older than Holly when he did that for the first time (he did it just before turning 8 months, whereas Holly did it just before turning 7 months) and THAT was kind of early. At this rate, she’ll be riding a bike  by the time she has her 9 month check-up! Anyway, she did it while I was sitting on the edge of the sofa tending to Emrick. She shimmy-crawled her way over, reached her tiny hand up onto the couch cushion, and stood up. Then she looked at Emrick and gave him the hugest grin. It was so sweet, and I wish I’d gotten a picture. Then Emrick said, “Mama and Holly are going to make Emrick feeled better.” Yes, Pookie. We hope so.

By 5:30, Emrick was feeling much better. And today he’s 100%. He even gave Holly lessons this morning on achieving the perfect crawl.

And he did it long enough for me to make a mad dash to get my camera. What a great kid.

Emrick is Three and a Half Years Old Today!

There are nine minutes left in March 16th, so I am getting this in just under the wire!

This week, Emrick received his “acceptance letter” (aka “we accept that check you wrote us”) for preschool, and he appears to be quite happy about it.

Look at that coy grin.

Emrick loves mac and cheese, strawberries, numbers, crackers, a cold juice, and Angry Birds.

He is 35 inches tall and weighs about 31 pounds. He’s been turning my insides into mush, for forty-two months and counting.

We love you, Emrick Braden Sorensen. You rock our world. ~muah!~

Holy Merlyn!

Holly is looking a lot like my mother-in-law!

And she is quite the little mover. My girl has no time to lie still, and no patience for anyone who tries to make her. Diaper changes have become a battle of wills. I am constantly pushing her hips down in an attempt to get the diaper fastened while she tries to crawl off the table and I stupidly plead with and warn her, as if my words could possibly mean anything to her! I told Marcus tonight that I think she will be one of those kids who climbs out of her crib at just a year old.

She is pretty much crawling now. I mean, it’s not a perfect crawl, but she can maneuver her way to any part of the room, no matter how far or in which direction. She just needs to see something she wants to grab and she is on her way. On Wednesday she had her six month check-up, and the doctor asked me what sorts of things she was doing. Was she rolling over? Reaching for things? Laughing? Answers: For three months now. All the time. You bet. And when I mentioned that she was about five seconds away from having crawling down pat, he said that was “remarkable”, declared her an “early developer”, and then proceeded to call the entire office staff into the exam room to shake my hand.

Okay, maybe not so much that last part.

Oh Holly. Mama loves her spunky girl!
