The day before Pookie’s birthday, we took him to a studio to get his first-ever professional photographs taken. Yes, first ever. When I was in the hospital recovering from the c-section, I was told that a professional photographer would be dropping by my room to offer his services. It wasn’t until I was discharged from the hospital three days later, that it suddenly dawned on me that no photographer had ever come. So the only pics taken of Emrick in the hospital that I know of are the ones taken by Marcus, and they are beautiful, so I can’t really complain.
Many months ago, though, I decided that we would spring for a professional photo session to mark the end of Emrick’s first year. Coincidentally, just two weeks before his birthday, a new photo studio that specializes in infant and child photography was opening up near to us, so we decided to give it a try. Overall we were pleased with what we got, partly because our expectations were low. Emrick doesn’t smile at strangers until after he has a good hour or so to eye them warily, so we figured that the photographer would be unable to elicit any smiles from Pookie. And we were right. She couldn’t do it. All of her feather-duster-tickling, tongue trilling, and enthusiastic smiling could not break the impenetrable, stony face with which Emrick regards most strangers.
Marcus and I, on the other hand, are HE-LARRY-US!! Or Emrick thinks so anyway! It was much harder to get him to smile at the studio than it is in the familiar comfort of our home, but in the 45-minute shoot, we were able to get a few here and there, not all of which was the photogapher quick enough to capture ( 🙁 ), but she still got a handful of darling pictures in the bunch, so we’re glad we did it.
(You may notice that in the first few pictures, Emrick is wearing the same outfit that he is wearing in the pics from our hospital visit the other day. This is just a coincidence. We are not forcing him into an all-striped-shirt-and-blue-jeans wardrobe.)

He just doesn’t have an unphotographic moment. Is that a word? Anyhow, your pictures always make me smile. He is adorable and I love him and I haven’t even seen him. Good job guys!
