What Happened in July

If you recall, I spent most of July blogging about our end-of-June trip to Florida, which left me little time to blog about July itself. So here is a little catch up, since I know everyone has been on the edge of their seats waiting to find out what sorts of mundane things filled the middle of our summer!

In July, Emrick looked like this:

In July, I bought three colorful storage ottomans from Target for the playroom. I say “storage” ottomans, but they don’t store much on Pookie’s watch:

In July, one night we had a moon that was so amazing, it looked like the sun in the pictures we took:

In July, some birds poached apricots from our apricot tree:

In July, I bought a “guaranteed to grow” daisy plant kit from the dollar section at Target:

It grew just great until a couple of weeks later when I killed it (by accident).

In July, I baked chocolate chip cookies for Emrick for the very first time (I know!):

In July, Marcus and I made family flashcards, using pictures we took at the family reunion in Florida in June:

Marcus printed them out and cut them up, and then I took them to Fed Ex, where they have a self-serve laminating machine. This flashcard thing was Marcus’ idea, and it has worked great. We made them with the hope of keeping his memory on these people fresh, and making it easier for him to readjust to people between visits, especially the grandparents whom he sees often. So far, he has seen all of his grandparents and one of his uncles since we made these, and in all cases, I think the cards definitely helped. He warms up in a couple of minutes instead of half an hour or more. AND, he knows everybody’s names. His pronunciation may not be perfect (e.g. Clark is “clock”; Anna is “nyeah”; Chris is “tiss” or “kiss”) but he knows every one. “Sam” is the one name he says perfectly.

In July, Marcus went to Boston for five nights for a trade show, and when he came back, he had some souvenirs for us:

In July, Marcus’ work moved into new office space that was being renovated. When we visited, the renovations were not all done, but they were far enough along that the offices were usable:

This is the office ping pong room. You read me right — the room that is dedicated solely to PING PONG. Marcus’ boss is quite the enthusiast.

This is Emrick relaxing on the bench in the foosball nook. Yep. Foosball nook.

After this, we toured the sports complex, the video game lair, and the laser tag arena. (ha)

In July, Emrick learned how to feed himself his own yogurt:

In July, Emrick watched the Olympics, surrounded by toys and snacks:

In July, Emrick got a hold of my camera:

In July one of the many fires burning Utah was burning in the foothills just above the neighboring community to us.

A few days after that fire was contained, and the streets reopened, we went for a drive in that community to see how close the fire had come to some of the houses we’d looked at during the Parade of Homes in June (I still need to post pics of those homes).

These charred trees were right across the street from one of the houses we saw.

Luckily for the people who live there, most, maybe all, of the homes were spared in that particular fire. I know people with homes in other parts of Utah were not so lucky.

Anyway, that’s what out July looked like. Tune in this December, when I will tell you what happened in August 😉

The End.

Great blog! I thought Marcus worked in a computer place….not WaHooz!! Hopefully you’re not serious about having to wait until December for August….we have a birthday in there too ya know!

Lovely post – great pics and captions. I think you rearrange the furniture every couple of days. Emrick and the ottomans are too cute. It’s a good thing I already have a flight to Utah or I’d be scrambling to get one.

I do like to rearrange furniture, but you know… in these pics, everything is arranged exactly the way it was during your last visit. I swear! And since that time, the only room that has changed is the playroom, though the ottomans are in the same spot.

Is Marcus a professional game player? Rough, I’m sure.
Pookie is getting cuter, if at all possible.

I almost overlooked the fact that the boy in the Red Sox shirt is, in fact, wearing red socks!

Love the post and pics. The flashcards are a great idea. And I am flattered he says Sam perfectly. I’d like to hear Samantha though ;). So is he saying Ed and Nick or Knucklehead and Dufus? I still have them labeled the latter in my phone. Not waiting til December for August and birthday post…so don’t drop the ball please.

Sam, he knew and remembered Ed as Ed from the start. But Nick is Doofus! For the first few weeks he said “doo-iss”, but now he has improved a little and is saying “dookus”. Someday, though, he will have to learn the truth about Nick’s name. I think it’s going to be traumatizing. All your fault! 🙂

I thought Sam was Doofus??? Sorry, confused here! LOL Great idea to keep him familiar with the faces. Now let’s hear him say Great Aunt Janet……..that’s just too much! How about Auntie Mame?

I take full responsibility. Janet, I can see why you thought I was dufus…cause I truly am one…and nick gets his dufism honestly.
