Bedtime Play

Sometimes, after we get Emrick bathed and jammied, he gets a few extra minutes to play and blow off steam before bed. If he’s not quite ready for
“sleepy time”, he spends those few minutes running around the house, screaming and laughing and nearly colliding with walls. But if he’s ripe for bed, then that down time often allows for a certain… oh, let’s call it a charming irritability… to show. When this happens, he is extra sensitive to being told he can’t do something, and it makes him very sad.

I am not the one who took this picture, so I’m not sure what Emrick is eyeing up there, but whatever it is, being kept away from it is having a profound effect on Pookie.

While I never like to see my baby cry, I can’t help but think that he has the sweetest sad face in the whole world!

Things got better after this, though. Marcus got a book down from the shelf and read it with Emrick. It’s called My Dad Loves Me. Luckily, I was in the play room by this point and could take some sweet pics.

It’s hard to tell from this pic (it’s hard to tell in person either for that matter), but that thing Emrick is doing with his arms? That’s his monkey impersonation. And he’s doing it after looking at a picture of dogs. That kid!

After being reminded that those are dogs and not monkeys, Emrick recalls that the neighbors have a dog, whom he sometimes sees from our backyard. He’s pointing to the back door of the house (where we exit to play in the yard) and saying, “Doggie? Doggie!”

Finally, Emrick matches up his monkey imitation with the right picture!

And then he went off to bed and dreamed of rocket ships and monkeys. The End.

He’s very lucky I can’t get his toes from here. They look especially delicious.
