California, Pt. 2

On Wednesday, Dad, Chris, Marcus, Emrick and I visited the Griffith Observatory. We didn’t do much except look at the free stuff, but when Emrick is older it would be fun to take him to the planetarium and other activities that they charge money for. But even the free version is pretty nice, as the Observatory offers great views of L.A. and is itself a piece of history. As many of you already know, they filmed a very long sequence from Rebel Without a Cause there. In fact, there is a James Dean memorial on site, which I neglected to photograph. But I did some Googling and came up with these instead:

That's Natalie Wood and someone else (?) looking up at the top of the Observatory. I think that's James Dean sitting on the ledge, and Sal Mineo looking down.

James Dean in front of the observatory.

Anyway, so there you go. L.A.’s version of serious history.

On the day we visited, it was sunny and nice.

My boys.

I spy Pookie's Uncle Chris.

As I said, the Observatory offers great views of Los Angeles.

See that hazy layer of whitish yellow on the horizon? That's Southern California's famous smog. It's what Angelenos eat for breakfast.

Griffith Observatory also has a great view of the Hollywood sign.

Emrick was as excited about the Hollywood sign as he was about the fire hydrant.

Maybe he was just annoyed by the crowds...

...or this funny dog.

"Woof!"

Three Men and a -- Hey! Where's the baby?

Oh Pookie!

That's apple juice and water mixed in a bottle. Emrick still hasn't perfected his sippy cup technique, but that's my fault since I don't force it on him often enough.

I just realized that Emrick's outfit matches his stroller. Sweet!

Emrick drinks up while L.A. looms in the background.

Tune in for Part 3 to see inside Griffith Observatory, as well as Emrick’s creepy juvenile stalker!
